The Thunder Rolls

Last night we stayed in Tucumcari, New Mexico. I'm really thankful for reviews on google maps to tell us which places are good stays. Phew! Not much to tell about the stop here.

This morning we got an early enough start and started cruisin'. I'm listening to a Nicholas Sparks audio book that Aaron can tolerate. Aaron is educating me as we also listen to "The Expanse" books. The story is enjoyable for me a little bit at a time.

Around Texas, the storm hit. Now, I'm a California girl. Any storm is a BIG storm. I was driving when we met the storm front, but my driving did not last long. With every streak of lightning through the sky, I found myself flinching. Not exactly safe driving posture. Thankfully, Aaron took over and drove like a pro. While I closed my eyes and tried to not to see the flashes of lightning, Aaron sang to me. Granted, he sang Garth Brooks', "The Thunder Rolls". Not the most comforting tune. But it was sweet and actually put me at ease.

A little after noon we got a chance to visit with my relatives Matt and Sam, and their adorable little son! The Boxcar of Moore, the cute brick coffee shop where we met, was fantastic! I wish California had places like this. Matt and Sam were a joy to see, and their son is precious! I enjoyed watching him play and toddle around the coffee shop. As we sipped coffee, the rain outside pounded on the roof, making it hard to hear each other. But I felt safe inside.

Eventually, it was time to head back out into the storm. Aaron was definitely still the driver. I laid my seat back and wished I had a shell like my tortoise Tanner Banner. A blanket would have to do. I ducked my head under and fell asleep.

I woke up in Missouri! Well, more like the very edge of Arkansas. It was such a relief to pull up to the Gundel house and get OUT to stay! God protected us on this stormy day. I'm grateful! The sunset on the farm was gorgeous tonight! The adventure continues, with only short-term driving tomorrow...
