Amarillo By Bedtime

God gave us a fantastic trip. He really did. Even so, it was hard to say goodbye and turn the car west. But here we are, on the road. The goal is to make it to Amarillo by bedtime. We're a couple hours out.

Yesterday was a hot one, but a good one. After sleeping in for a bit, we drove about an hour to Eureka Springs. Eureka Springs is a quirky little town in Arkansas with lots of little shops. My sweet husband waited patiently while Sherry and I window shopped and sometimes walked into a store (mostly to feel the cool air conditioning). One of the things I love about states like Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas is that you can find "Christian" merchandise all over the place. Items with Bible verses or hymns on them. Those are hard to find in California. Here are a few pictures from the Eureka Springs fun.

On the way out of Eureka Springs, we stopped at Bombadil's Cafe. Aaron was excited about the "second breakfast" options, and the view of the Ozarks from the big windows was gorgeous!

Update (Saturday, June 30, 2:20 p.m.)

Well, we made it to Amarillo by bedtime last night. But it wasn't easy. Somewhere around the Oklahoma-Texas line, an electrical storm crossed our paths. For a long time. I have never seen so much lightning in my whole life! I mean, lightning was allllllllll around us- in front, behind, side to side. I Tanner-ed up under my blanket again while Aaron drove through it for at least an hour like a champion. He tells me that lightning is the least concerning thing about a storm- the high winds and heavy rain are the real threat. In my mind, I'm sure he's right, but in my heart, the lightning is the enemy.

I'm thanking God He brought us to Amarillo safely. The storm took a break for the couple of minutes while we checked into the hotel and unpacked the car. We slept soundly last night and picked up the journey again early this morning.

Aaron recently took back the driver's seat after a long morning making our way through Texas and New Mexico. Our goal for tonight is Kingman, Arizona. Only about three hours to go! Time is on our side going this direction. We've hopped back two time zones, so even though it feels like 4:30, the clocks say 2:30.

Our snack foods are running out, so we've got to make it home tomorrow. Plus, a certain sister of mine is turning 25 years old tomorrow! It's a big day! Thankfully, if we make it to Kingman tonight, there will only be about eight hours to drive tomorrow. But, for now, it's one mile at a time.

Baby steps.
