The End Approaches

Our stay in Missouri is coming to an end.  Seems like we just got here, but we're starting to plan out how we're going to get home.  We've never really had to do that before because we've always flown - it was planned out for us.  I considered taking us the northern route through Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada - but that's two to three hours longer than the southern route on 40.  I'm also afraid of any 4th of July traffic we might run into outside of Tahoe.

So we're heading back on 40 tomorrow.  I considered doing it in two days - which is possible - but I figured it was probably better to leave at a reasonable hour on Friday and try to make it through most of Oklahoma and into Texas.  That will put us in a much better position to make some distance on Saturday and Sunday.

It's been a good trip.  We spent Tuesday in Silver Dollar City.  It was the first time I've been to the park and not really been on any of the larger roller coasters.  I think there's still enough entertainment in the park to make it worth it to me.  But it's challenging.  It was a pretty hot day, and we left a little early.  Turns out it was a good thing we did - it started pouring a few minutes after we left.  We headed over to Hollister and got coffee at Hollister Coffee Company.  It's probably the best I've had in Missouri so far.  Not as good as Onyx in Bentonville - but not too bad at all.

It's always a good thing for me to remember the perks of living in California.  It's hot, but it's almost never this hot.  The humidity is pretty unbearable.  I'm glad the a/c works here.  I think it's good for me to get climatological perspective - and going here in the summer gives me that.

We went to Bentonville and Rogers yesterday.  We visited Lee (my high school cross country coach) for a while and talked about post-retirement life.  Then we went over to Onyx and got a good cup of coffee before we headed over to House of Webster in Rogers.  It's been more than a decade and a half since I threw mason jars on the assembly line there.

Today we visited Eureka Springs.  I'll let Allyssa write more about that.  It was ultra-hot today.

So we're coming back to California tomorrow with a lot of stuff.  Honey, jam, meat, things from a bunch of gift stores, some Christmas shopping done....whew.  I guess that's an advantage of driving.  You do get to bring more stuff home.

Coming home is always a mixed bag.  It'll be good to be back to routine and decent weather.  It's never fun to have to leave before you feel like you've done everything you want to do.  That's life.  We run out of paycheck and vacation far faster than we'd like to on these trips.  (Of course, I'm the one that runs out of vacation.  Allyssa still has it in spades!)

Things are always changing here.  The world doesn't wait for you when you leave.  It keeps going - getting further and further from what you remember that it once was.  It's strange.  Surreal.

Here we go again.

P.S. We found a decent "Welcome to Missouri" sign off 37 in Seligman.
